Broken City

There’s not a whole lot to say about this movie honestly, just a really decent movie. Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg always put on really good performances. So based on that alone I would recommend you watch it.

Riddick

I am a fan of the Riddick trilogy (not counting the animated flicks, I have not seen them). That being said, this third installment was basically the same plot as the first one. I know they kind of did that intentionally, but I would of liked to seen a continuing storyline of Riddick being the ruler of the Necromongers. I don’t really get why they would jump ship and try to bring it back to how it all started in Pitch Black. I mean it’s almost the exact same movie! I was still entertained however, but surely the next one will take him back to the Necromongers so he can take revenge on the people who left him to die on the sun-scorched planet. The Chronicles of Riddick is still my favorite of the three current films to date.

I’ve been waiting impatiently for this movie to show up at the theater as soon as I heard they were making it. This movie is awesome and did not disappoint. I am a HUGE fan of the comic book and have nearly all the issues. I am anxious to see if they bring in the Annihilation storyline in the next movie or the future. However, it seems Thanos will be a major player in the next flick. Yes, I said Thanos! I can’t believe he was actually in this movie doing something other than taking a selfie like he did in the Avengers. I was about to lose my mind when he was having a conversation with Ronan. The scene was epic!

Speaking of Ronan the Accuser, he is played by Lee Pace. You might know him from the newly hit AMC show Halt and Catch Fire. Or for all you Hobbit fans –Thranduil, the leader of the wood elves, or for all you Twilight kids, he was Garrett in Breaking Dawn: Part 2. There is probably no better actor in their prime right now than Lee Pace. The dude is freaking awesome in every character he plays. (SPOILER ALERT!) As Ronan, he was talking shit to the mad titan Thanos! Who talks shit to Thanos?!? He single-handedly destroyed the Nova Corps armada and absorbed the power of an infinity gem similar to the comic where he stored the power cosmic in his hammer as a herald of Galactus. Lee Pace is the man. Everyone should follow his work.

Moving on to the rest of the cast, I have no issues with whom Marvel chose for each character. Chris Pratt is perfect as Starlord, and hilarious. About ¾ of the movie is funny but the storyline and action fit right in perfectly. This is probably the only movie Marvel has made that actually stayed true to the comic without changing much other than Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I love this movie!

Wreck-It Ralph

Occasionally I will watch a computer animated kid’s movie, but it has to be about something that interests me. Like video games for instance. I really enjoyed this movie and it was pretty funny as well. Ralph is voiced by John C. Reilly, and I never would have pictured him doing an animated movie but it works really well. The best thing about this flick is somehow Disney got the rights to have many old school video game characters like Q-bert and the Street Fighter cast. It is so cool.  If you haven’t seen Wreck-It Ralph, please do with your kids and family, especially if you like video games.

The third movie I have seen with Justin Timberlake in it and I must say he is a great actor. This movie centers on JT trying to get his masters at Princeton, while also doing referrals for online gaming to get a commission. The Dean catches wind of this and threatens to kick him out, even though this is JT’s way of paying for college. Not to ruin the movie, but thing go bad to worse and involves some out of the country traveling and the FBI. You get the picture.

I really enjoyed this movie and so did the wife, so you know it’s gotta be good. It’s also great to see the future Batman, Ben Affleck, playing as a good/bad/evil gambling ring leader who is behind pretty much all the drama in the movie. There is some great acting in this flick. I’m still not sold on him playing Batman though, hahaha.

The Princess Bride

It’s always great to go to your local Walmart and hit the $5 drop-bins and find a cult- classic dvd. I just had to get it. Who doesn’t like The Princess Bride? With a bunch of really great B-class actors and Andre the Giant, everyone who grew up in the 80’s has seen this fantasy/adventure flick.

So I revisited this old movie that I used to love while trying to explain to my wife how epic it was, however I think she stayed on her ipad or fell asleep as usual. Anyway in 2014 it is still entertaining, maybe not as funny, but I still enjoyed the classic one-liners that I have missed hearing. “My name is Inigo Montoya, You killed my father, prepare to die!” And who doesn’t love a good slapstick medieval times comedy?

Annette Bening was on a streak showing up in virtually every movie in the mid-to-late 90’s. Her character doesn’t really do much in this flick except get in the way of Denzel and the FBI while they are trying to crack down on some terrorists, yet she’s in the CIA and should be trying to help. When she finally does decide to help, everything just gets worse. This movie kinda hits home even though it was released before 9/11, you can see the beginnings of how terrorism is growing in the states, and possibly a preview of what could happen if it gets so out of control that martial law in enforced. One could only pray that the General doesn’t do what Bruce Willis does.

Another example of a movie with a bunch of great actors, but the movie sucks. Some of it was funny…. some of it.

The Bourne Legacy

I realize there is a huge following of the Bourne saga, and I will admit they are action packed. I own the first three DVDs starring Matt Damon. Now this one showcases Jeremy Renner who is apparently another one of the failed government experiments who tries to bring down the system….again. Renner is a bad-ass, but its hard to watch him in a movie like this when all your thinking is Hawkeye just killed a dude! Haha, just kidding. No really, these movies are full of action but I am Bourne-out already. How many movies can you make of the same storyline? As long as it makes money I guess, but I’m not buying this one.
